Brighter Boys Project

Supporting boys experiencing school refusal, school anxiety and disengagement from learning.

A Space Where Boys Feel Understood

About the program

What is Brighter Boys?

Brighter Boys is a boys-only learning and mentoring program helping primary-aged boys stay connected to learning through positive male role models and structured learning support.

Brighter Boys is not tutoring and it’s not therapy.

It’s a space where boys can feel comfortable, supported, and understood.

Who is this program for?

Brighter Boyss may be suitable for boys who are experiencing:

  • School refusal

  • School anxiety

  • Attendance concerns

  • Bullying

  • Low confidence

  • Disengagement from learning

Is this therapy?

No. Brighter Boys is not therapy.

It’s a mentoring-based program focused on connection, guidance, and support.

While it is run within a safe and supportive environment, it is not a clinical service.

If a child requires specialised therapeutic support, we can always guide families towards appropriate services.

Meet our ambassador, Nick.

There’s something about Nick that’s hard to put into words, but every child feels it and every parent sees it.

Kids are drawn to him almost instantly. They feel comfortable around him, they trust him, and they open up in ways that often surprise their parents.

Parents often tell us things like, “I’ve never seen him talk like that before,” or “He actually listens to Nick.” That’s when it clicked: it’s not just what Nick says, it’s how he makes young people feel.

As Brighter Boys' Ambassador and Lead Learning Mentor, Nick supports boys to stay connected to learning, build confidence, and engage positively with school. Whether he's helping with homework, working through a challenging task, or simply encouraging a student who is having a tough day, Nick has a unique ability to meet boys where they are and help them take the next step forward.

Nick is still in high school himself, navigating many of the same challenges young people face today. He understands the pressures of school, friendships, confidence, and finding your place. He’s not trying to relate… he simply does.

For many boys, Nick becomes more than just someone helping with their learning. He becomes someone they trust, someone they look up to, and someone they know is genuinely in their corner.

The Story Behind Brighter Boys

Brighter Boys was created in honour of Gabe… someone who had a remarkable way of helping people believe in themselves.

He showed up for people. Not in a big, loud way, but in the quiet, consistent way that makes a lasting difference. He encouraged others to keep going, especially when things felt difficult, and he believed in the power of learning, growth and second chances.

That belief sits at the heart of Brighter Boys.

Today, many boys are struggling to stay connected to school. Some are experiencing school anxiety, attendance challenges, bullying, low confidence or a growing disengagement from learning.

Brighter Boys exists to provide support before those challenges become bigger barriers.

Through learning support, positive male role models and a safe, encouraging environment, we aim to help boys rebuild confidence, stay connected to learning and feel capable of taking the next step forward.

The program is led by mentors who understand the challenges young people face today and who are committed to showing up each week with patience, encouragement and genuine care.

Because sometimes the most powerful thing we can do for a young person is help them believe that they can succeed, even when they're struggling to believe it themselves.

That's the legacy Gabe left behind, and it's the legacy Brighter Boys hopes to continue.

What Makes This Different?

Many boys who are struggling with school engagement don't need more pressure, they need the right environment.

Brighter Boys combines learning support with positive male role models in a relaxed, supportive setting where boys can stay connected to learning without fear of judgement or failure.

Rather than focusing solely on academic results, we focus on helping boys rebuild confidence, experience success, and develop a more positive relationship with learning and school.

Led within a social work-informed environment, Brighter Boys recognises that when boys feel supported, understood and capable, meaningful progress often follows.

What Parents Often Notice

Parents often tell us that their son:

  • Feels more confident approaching school work

  • Becomes more engaged with learning

  • Looks forward to attending each week

  • Develops positive relationships with peers and mentors

  • Feels more capable of tackling challenges at school

  • Gains confidence through small, achievable successes

While every child is different, many parents notice improvements not only in their child's attitude towards learning, but also in their overall confidence and willingness to give things a go.
